How to get to Indonesia: cycle? Fly? By boat?

Today's blog will be in english for our hosts in Signapore that we left behind, heading for Indonesia.
After a few days rest, Michel gets a little nervous about what's to come, but he always has a plan. After a delicious breakfast that Xinhan made us, we started cycling to the bridge to cross to the ferry that would take us out of Singapore. First setback: the bridge seems to be closed between 8AM and 8PM, because they are working on it. So? Didn't we want more adventure than in Malaysia?

We crossed the city to get to the ferry and all went smoothly to get the bicycles on the boat. Price: 40 euros. The Indonesia immigration officer gave us only a 30 days visa (25 USD), so we'll have to extend it somewhere.
Originally we wanted to take a boat from Batam to Pekanbaru, but last minute Michel learned from someone that the conditions on the boat are very poor, everyone gets sick and it is more expensive than flying. So we decided to cycle to the airport of Batam and see for ourselves. We left Singapore at 12h30 and arrived at the airport at 15h, which we learned was in fact 14h Indonesian time. In 1/2h we had bought our tickets from Lion Air for a flight to Padang at 16h30.
We never know up front how they want us to pack the bicycles and obviously we didn't have any boxes to put them in. It was a big surprise to us that they only wanted it wrapped in plastic that they provide at the airport. People were ever so friendly! We let the air out of our tires, turned the handlebar and that was it! We didn't even have to take the pedals off. And the price? The whole lot (ticket + bicycle) costed 40 euro for the 2 of us, we'll never understand how that is possible. After one hour flight with a brand new Boeing 737 we were in Padang. Since everything went so smoothly and it was getting dark, we tried our luck again by taking a taxi to the first volcano we want to visit, up the mountain off course. A 3 hour-drive for 15 euros + tip to Bukitt Tinggi where we found a place to sleep. For the first time this trip we ate after 7PM and it costed us 2 euros, drinks included.

We are pretty certain that we will love Indonesia!
